Phenylalanine-4-hydroxylase

Name: Phenylalanine-4-hydroxylase
Description: Phenylalanine hydroxylase (EC 1.14.16.1) is an enzyme which catalyses the reaction responsible for the addition of a hydroxyl group to the end of the 6-carbon aromatic ring of phenylalanine, such that it becomes tyrosine. Phenylalanine hydroxylase is the rate-limiting enzyme of the metabolic pathway which degrades excess phenylalanine. The PAH gene or a 1:1 ortholog thereof encodes for phenylalanine hydroxylase.
Synonym(s): Phe-4-monooxygenase, Phenylalanine hydroxylase
Abbreviation: PAH
Is part of: Catecholamine system, Adrenergic system, Dopaminergic system, Noradrenergic system
Has role: Enzyme
Super-category: Protein
